Reflection:
This week we did a lot of planning for the upcoming camping trip. I am so excited for next week and I can't wait to share my work with my peers and make badass prints. I also found the objects that we want to get on the trip. The space object I am most excited about is the Eagle Nebula I can't wait to get a hopefully great image of it. Reflection:
This week we were introduced to a new text from the book Light by Bruce Watson. We dissected the intro and learned about the philosophers, artists and the scientists that were referenced in the text. For chemistry we learned organic Chemistry, we did a new experiment with boric acid and glue and we also watched an episode of cosmos that told us about light. Humanities: Wonder and Curiosity By Pablo Robin Scientists, artists and philosophers back in the time where christianity was the prominent source of knowledge were visionaries and they were pushing the boundaries in their respective fields. Artists like Caravaggio pushed boundaries by painting these scenes that showed human emotion and actions with a dramatic use of lighting. Caravaggio's lighting and the fact that he realistically painted the human figure was very influential in starting a new style of painting. This was called Baroque. It came after renaissance art and was heavily influenced by light. The Baroque style of art is big on shadows and light sources affecting the scenes in the paintings. Caravaggio is a great example of using light sources from different angles. He used his high contrast style of Baroque to evoke movement and passion. The way Caravaggio used light inspired a whole new style of art solidifying him as someone who was pushing the boundaries with light. Philosophers were able to think about light in a different way than the church. The church was very mad that people were looking for answers other than god this led to many philosophers being jailed and killed because of their defiance to the church. Philosophers like Plato actually did a lot to the christianity. However at the same time Plato did have his own way of thinking called Platonism. He spoke a lot of the afterlife. He didn't think of it like the bible does now with the afterlife being a dark place, he thought that our minds were trapped in reality and the afterlife set our minds free to have no limits and have a better life than our previous life. Plato also had different views about light, he said, “The sun is a metaphor for the nature of reality and knowledge concerning it.” In his Allegory of the sun. Scientists like Galileo were able to theorize light. Galileo looked to space for light. By looking at space he was able to see the first light. He discovered moons on jupiter and observed comets and galaxies very closely. According to Albert Einstein he is the Father of modern science. That is because he was one of the first people to really look to space for answers instead of god. That ended up with him being credited for theorizing the Big Bang. They proved their doubters wrong and were able to produce mind blowing, world changing work. Without these 3 visionaries we would not know the things we know about today. Chemistry: Epoxy/Polymer By Pablo I went into class and saw new things on the board. The board said Organic Chemistry. I sat down and learned what was inside of every living thing. Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen and Carbon. We then learned about how different chemicals bond together to create things like epoxy. We learned how our epoxy coating worked in a chemistry standpoint. We mix the hardener and resin and they form crosslinks which makes the epoxy that we cover our prints with. Some resins and hardeners mix quicker than others, our first epoxy took a long time to harden, but once we finished that one we made a new cheaper one. The cheaper one turned into epoxy much faster to harden and that meant that it had more crosslinks. We also did a very interesting experiment with Boric Acid and Elmer's Glue. We mixed them together and my groups mixture was very soupy and not like some other groups. What the other groups did differently was they added a lot of boric acid which made more crosslinks so the mixture would make a thicker flubber like substance. I got to play with the other kind of the mixture and I have to say I liked playing with it more than some soupy glue and boric acid. I wonder what people use this mixture for? Video Reflection: The video was very insightful about the way we uncovered the secrets to light. I liked learning about the findings that the early scientists found when conducting their experiments. I also think I got a lot out of it when it came to experiments I would want to do my self. Like the one where you get the a prism hold it up to the light and look at the rainbow with a telescope. I definitely want to conduct that experiment and see the black lines in the rainbow. Reflection: This week we started printing our landscapes and finishing up the second phase. So far they have looked amazing. I was the first to finish it and I have had a great week helping people edit their photos. I love doing this work I wish I could do it everyday for my entire life. I am really trying to prefect my craft and I am so glad that I can show my work that I have worked hard to get.
Humanities: Beautiful Photos By Pablo Robin Photo: I think the photo is the most important piece of a beautiful photo because without the high quality photo you cant edit it the way you want you cant print it and make it look good and if the print sucks the epoxy wont help it to much. If the photo is high quality and its a photo that makes you feel something I think thats a good photo. A photo is light everything in it is light. A cool thing that can make a photo beautiful is how the light looks in the photo with shadows and just the positioning of light in your photo. Processing: I think processing is very important because it allows you to make the colors look good. It allows you to also sharpen the image and add or take away the strength of the light in your photo. Processing also helps make a not so good photo look amazing depending on how the processor does it. Processing is the only way you can manipulate the light in a photo without going out and taking better photos. Metallic Paper: Metallic paper is a high quality medium that your photo can be printed on. The way it works with light is that it uses the light shining on it to an advantage. When the light shines on it, it glimmers and shines. The medium also brings out the highlights on the image which can look really beautiful too. Epoxy Coat: The epoxy coat makes the print look like glass is covering the photo which makes the photo look glossier and more professional. The epoxy coat reflects light off of it much like glass does. Chemistry: This week I printed my photo out on metallic paper and coated it in epoxy, It looked amazing. I started my process with choosing my image. I chose the image I thought looked the best and what other people said made them feel good. I chose a slow shutter photo I took of a natural waterfall while in japan. I then had to process the RAW file because the RAW file is a higher resolution than the one on my phone. I used light room to edit it I tried to get the waterfall to be the main component of the image really making the white of the water pop out and I made sure to make the colors subtle. Then when I got the picture perfect for printing, I printed it on 13x19 metallic paper. It already looked amazing but then we got out the epoxy and resin and mixed them 50/50 and made the coating for the photo. We mounted the metallic print on a piece of wood and then we poured the mixture on the piece and spread it around evenly. After that we blow torched it to get bubbles out and we let it dry over night. When it was finished drying it looked amazing. It is one of the proudest pieces of work I have ever done. Reflection:
This week I went on 2 field trips. The first one to 3 sisters falls which is a famous hard hike near julian. The second place I went to was sunset cliffs and PLNU for more landscape photos. We fine tuned the writing pieces from the week before. We also processed a lot of images. Humanities: Contrastpiece:https://docs.google.com/document/d/13VfdsytG-qlJoWfClx7p34KTJDc3fO4vtckix55-zv0/edit Windansea by Pablo Robin A few miles South of Torrey Pines, Windansea beach drops in close to downtown La Jolla and stretches for a mile. The water is cold yet refreshing, especially in the summer when the temperature of the air is hot and the sun is up for the whole day. The beach is lined with small cliffs and large rocks, but on the shoreline the water breaks ferociously on the white sand. Ice plants line the cliffs new growth over dead and purple flowers arise from the otherwise green plants; the rocks on the shoreline wear smooth from constant crashing waves. Small sand crabs burrow in the wet sand to hide from the waves and predators. Many seagulls fly in the air searching for an opportunity to swoop down to have a meal. Rarely a pelican will pass by the horizon line, the mighty animal flies close over the ocean looking through the clear blue water for a snack. On an overcast day, the water looks green and clear because it is not reflecting the blue skies that are usually over the ocean. In the early morning when there is no wind the water becomes glass. The surfers go out and the wind comes and ruins the tranquility of the water. When the sun finally comes out the people start to gather on the white sand. The tide rises and chases people from the sand. Footprints leading towards the stairs. The sun dips below the horizon, the sky darkens to shades of orange and pink. The ocean begins to calm itself again, The people go to sleep, the animals go to sleep and the ocean goes back to tranquility. Chemistry: I woke up early with excitement coursing through my body. I got out of bed and immediately got ready. I filled my pack with snacks water and my camera. I was preparing for the worst. I arrived to school and we soon left. We got in the van it was dirty. We didn't have an AUX cord we almost had to resort to listening to a CD full of Bon Jovi. Luckily we stopped at Vons on the way to the hike and purchased an AUX cord. The drive was beautiful, once we got off the 8 freeway. We started going higher and higher in altitude. We got so high the we could seethe clouds move quickly over the peaks of the surrounding mountains and hills. However we did get lost because of the limited connection that we had and the fact that somebody flipped the signs around. We still made it to the trailhead. I got out of the car It was pretty chilly, but not for long. I took my first step on the three sisters falls hike. Then we breezed through the first mile it was a wide trail with mostly downhill sections. We got to see a great view of the falls from far away they had a lot of water. Once we went down the first mountain we entered the ravine which had a small river running through it. We were told by Andrew that there could be a lot of poison oak in the ravine. Me being on the trip for photos I saw a great places to get a photo of a small waterfall. I went through the thin path sideways to get to the small waterfall. Andrew saw where I was and told me that I might've brushed against some poison oak. I came back really carefully to make sure I didn't get any Urushiol on my skin. Urushiol is the chemical found in poison oak. When contact is made with your skin Urushiol goes into the second layer and causes an allergic reaction. I wasn't to worried about it because it happens to people all the time. I didn't want to take a bath in oatmeal either so I was hoping that I didn't make contact and that if I did that going in the falls would help me. So I pushed on continuing down the second mountain. That mountain had ropes going down it because it walking down it without them would be really dangerous. It was really fun going down them because I had never done anything like that on a hike. Once we got down the ropes we started hiking towards the waterfalls. There was a bunch of traversing on one part and a fellow hiker Will fell and was luckily saved by Russell another member of the team. We crossed the small river a few times using small sometimes wet rocks to get across. We finally made it to the falls and we took some photos for a while they were looking amazing. But we started getting hot so we went on a waterslide. Thats right a waterslide. The 1st waterfall made the rock into a smooth surface that you could slide off and we had a lot of fun going down it. When we were finished refreshing in the falls we hiked back to the trail head. We went a better way to the ropes and on the way we ran into a damsel in distress. It was probably the high 90s when we were going up the ropes. The ropes went up a sandy slope that felt like for every 3 steps we took we took 1 step back. We got to the top of the ropes and the damsel wasnt felling to good but luckily we found her friends and they called the rangers and from there It was smooth sailing. We made it back to the cars completely gassed and returned to school. The best part was that I may have not touched the poison oak because I never reacted to it. |
