Reflection: This week I got a lot of work done. I am almost done with my first draft of my 1000 word writing piece about my photo that I took at UCSD. We started developing our photos and my photo turned out really nice on the silver emulsion. I have a lot of work to still do for phase 1 of the project like editing my Dorothea Lange writing piece. I also finished Of Mice and Men it had quite the ending. Chemistry: Emulsion By Pablo Isaac Robin We started with silver nitrate and sodium chloride. We put it in a glass that was put over a bowl of hot water when we put the mixture of the silver nitrate and sodium chloride it rearranged the mixture and created silver chloride and sodium nitrate. We then got a sponge brush to coat our paper with the emulsion. The emulsion needs to be coated evenly on the paper. A way to check that you have spread it evenly is to hold it up to the light and if it is glossy you’re good. We then gave our wet papers to Andrew who kindly dried them with his trusty blow dryer. We repeated this process a total of 3 times. Then we put the papers in a light sealed box. Then we print our negative. When we edit our photo to print we have to make sure to turn it negative so when we develop it the right colors come out. Once we print out the negative we have to expose it onto the paper we spread the emulsion on. To expose it you have to shine a light on it, we first used test strips to figure out how long we have to shine the light on the picture. After we knew how long to shine it we tried it out on the coated paper. We shined the light for one second on the coated paper with the negative on top. After that we put it in the developing liquid for a split second the developer liquid makes the picture show up on the picture, then we quickly put the paper in the stop liquid which stops the developing process so it doesn't get over developed and turn grey. After the stop liquid we put the paper in the fixer which dissolves the remaining silver left on the paper. Then we washed it in water for two minutes and dried it and its ready for the frame. 1. What is the best light to shine on the paper? 2. What happens when a paper is under developed? Humanities: Composition: I tried to fill the frame with the subject. I was really impressed on how the photo looked when it appeared on my monitor. I liked how the background of the image filled in all of the empty space of the image. I also chose this image because the man was smiling. His smile is in the right third of the image which is supposed to draw the eye. The main and only light source of this image is the sun. The sun was shining from above onto his hat. When changing the image to black and white the light that was hitting the hat was acting like a hair light separating the hat from the background. I edited it in color at first and focus a lot on the colors. I then realized I had to edit a black and white image. I had to restart my processing in a way. I tried to use contrast to my advantage in this image because I think images that have dark blacks and bright whites look better than your average black and white shot. Personal: I chose this image for a lot of reasons. When I saw him I was immediately drawn to the camera that was around his neck. He had an old Canon AE-1, I knew he would understand when I asked him for a photo because he looked like a photographer. I asked him and he said sure and smiled I was able to get some really clean shots of him while he was smiling. When I was looking through my photos on the way back to school this one really stood out to me. His smile is just so infectious. It makes me happy just looking at it. I set out that day looking for a positive image and I believe that I found one. What I also liked about the image was how good he looked in black and white. His clothes are perfect for it because he is wearing a light shirt and a dark jacket and it just helps him pop out from a pretty full background. African americans at Ucsd: This photo was taken at UCSD. The man I took a photo of looked African American. I thought I would research African Americans at UCSD. 71% of UCSD undergraduates are students of color. As of 2016 2% of the undergraduate student body of UCSD is African American. In 2006 1% of UCSD undergraduates were African american. UCSD has had a past of some of the student body having racist behavior, for example: they had a “Compton Cookout” during black history month mocking the African Americans. Since then UCSD students have said that they are not racist and that was a small group of students that no longer attend. From walking around there I did notice a low amount of African American students. The African American students I saw looked very happy. It seems like UCSD is on the right path to leveling out the diversity of their university. History of UCSD: The University of California San Diego was started in November of 1960. It was essentially an extension to the Scripps Institute of Oceanography. The land of the school is in La Jolla the campus occupies 2,141 acres of land, which was given to the university for free by the city of San Diego. The university was built from the ground up. The money for the buildings was given to the university by John Jay Hopkins of General Dynamics Corporation who pledged one million dollars. More funding has been recently given to the university by Qualcomm. In 2013 Travel + Leisure named UCSD one of the ugliest campuses in the United States. It was mainly because of The architecture being in a brutalist style. I personally think that UCSD is one of the most beautiful places in San Diego. UCSD has also been named one of the happiest colleges in the US by the Daily Beast. I could tell this when I went not many people had a frown on their face. UCSD is also the 17th best undergraduate program in the world according to the Center for World University Rankings. The school has also produced over 680 Google employees. SubjectPOV: I just finished my second class of the day. I am on my way to the third class of the day and then I’m free for the rest of the day. Today I am planning to walk around campus taking pictures for my photography class. I got a new camera that I can't wait to test out. It is the classic Canon AE-1. I have never used film before and I cannot wait. My professor always raves about it and I just had to see what all the fuss was about. I’m almost to my third class. I see a kid walking towards me. He asks, “are you in a hurry?” I replied, “no,” “can I take your photo?” The kid said. I thought to myself I look pretty good today I've had to ask people for photos why not? I replied “Sure!” He snapped his photos I hope they came out good. The short time I was being shot I felt famous like I mattered that helped the rest of my day to be one of the best days of my life. My plan for a trip would be to go on a hike at Cedar Creek Falls AKA "The Devils Punchbowl." Its a light hike and we can get good land scape shots with a waterfall. It is also a short drive from laguna so after we can camp at Laguna and get even more landscapes there during sunset and sunrise. It would be epic.

Reflection: I loved going to Balboa Park to take pictures it was so fun especially when I was writing my blog earlier and it all deleted but you know its always darkest before the dawn. I liked how the background of the image filled in all of the empty space of the image. I also chose this image because the man was smiling. Photos of the Week: Reflection: This week I was very productive. Even though I had a seizure and missed an entire day of school I was able to finish all of my work. In humanities we had a lot of work time which helped me. Also in chemistry we did some emulsions of photos and learned more about that. We also had a workshop about editing on photo shop. Workshop Chemistry: This is the original image. This is the first image edited, I made it darker and added contrast to make him clear yet not blown out. Humanities: I finished my rough draft of my 1000 word essay. Photo Plan: Ask people that seem interesting for photos try and get closer(foot to frame) Photos of the Week: Taken at UCSD. Reflection: This week in class we took a lot of good portraits and made a lot of t-shirts. In humanities we started reading Of Mice And Men by John Steinbeck. So far I really like the book its a quick read that has a lot of depth. We also started writing our Dorothea Lange writing and so far I have written two of the five. I think for next week I have to spend more time on it because I feel behind. In chemistry we started making our first emulsions and we turned the class into a dark room. Chemistry: My jobs in class are the paper guy and the documenter. I took photos of the process of the dark room and the emulsions. I am still yet to do any paper stuff, next week I will become more familiar with it. Humanities: Dorothea Write Up: Composition: The man is positioned in the center third of the frame. The background is blurred meaning the aperture was wide. It does a good job of separating the foreground from the background. Another way the subject stands out is that he is wearing all dark colors which brings him out from the white background. The photo is also in black and white. Which means the skies that day were cloudy because of the white skies. The cloudy skies mean there was no shadows because the sun was being blocked. The clouds acted like a soft box for the sun. The mans hat shaded his face so you could see all the creases in his face. The creases in his face add a lot of drama to the photo it looks like he's been through a lot. The way he is standing looks staged, but at the same time the look on his face is a sad one, which means it might be candid, Dorothea Lange could have asked him to make that face or that was just how he felt at the time. Autobiographical: Dorothea Lange was a documentary photographer who always tried to provoke the thoughts of americans with her amazing and thoughtful photos. She was born in the year 1985, in Hoboken, New Jersey. In 1913 she moved to New York City and it changed her life forever. After working in a photography studio she decided to become a photographer. She attended the University of Columbia for photography. In 1918 she was living in San Francisco with her own photography studio and a family. She started documentary photography in the 1920s photographing Native Americans. Then in the 1930s with the great depression in full effect she started taking photos of labor strikes and breadlines in her local state of California. She then went all around the United States taking impactful documentary photos about the great depression. Her photos conveyed hard intense times during the great depression. After the great depression she took photos of the Japanese internment camps that similar to the great depression photos showed hard times in America's history. Dorothea Lange died at 70 years old from esophageal cancer in 1965. Steinbeck:
1. George is constantly getting Lennie out of trouble. They are tramps living off cans of beans and looking for work wherever they can get it. Lennie is more irresponsible than George. 2. "Your aunt Clara give you a rubber mouse and you wouldn't have nothing to do with it." "It wasn't no good to pet." In this part Steinbeck may be talking about how in the great depression the workers were very replaceable much like the mice that Lennie's aunt Clara gives him. Then when you have something that will last longer like a rubber mouse you will have to pay more. No one wants to pay more when moneys tight. |
